Record Cargo volumes handled at Maastricht Airport

6 November 2009

Despite the falling volumes and general gloom across the industry as a whole, Maastricht Airport handled more freight in October 2009 than in any month in its history.

During October 8,200 of freight were handled by the airport's handling division, Maastricht Handling Services. The record volumes are driven by the recently acquired services to Moscow and Shanghai, combined with growth from established customers servicing Istanbul and Nairobi. In addition, the overnight courier express services and ad hoc charter freight flights have demonstrated steady growth.

Sander Heijmans, CEO of the airport, noted, "with our growing customer base and the commitment of our long term customers we are expecting to handle the same amount of freight in 2009/10 as in the previous record breaking year; we may even exceed this level slightly. Even during the depths of the recession we have performed better than the industry average".

To accomodate further growth the airport is building a new 18,000m2 cargo terminal on the eastern side of the airfield. The accompanying new platform will be capable of handling the newest cargo aircraft including the Boeing 747-800F. The terminal is expected to come into operation in January 2011.
