![]() Until December 2003, Omniport held a minority interest in Glasgow Prestwick International Airport in Scotland, which is acquired in January 2001. Omniport was responsible for brokering the acquisition from Stagecoach Holdings Ltd and for introducing two significant equity partners to the deal - Infratil of New Zealand and the Special Utilities Investment Trust (now Utilico Investment Trust PLC). As part of the acquisition, Omniport was also granted a Technical Services Agreement (TSA) under which it was able to target key areas of the business at Glasgow Prestwick, including route development, aircraft maintenance and overhaul (MRO) developments and a number of other technical aspects of the airport operation. Omniport was instrumental in increasing annual passenger numbers at Prestwick from 800,000 in 2001 to over 2 million in 2003. In addition to substantive growth in charter services, the number of scheduled European destinations increased from 4 to 16 in this period and scheduled airlines operating from Prestwick increased from 1 (Ryanair) to 6. Omniport's ability to enhance these key value drivers resulted in a near-doubling in earnings (EBITDA) during the Company's ownership. In December 2003, Infratil offered to acquire Omniport's minority share in Glasgow Prestwick. Whilst Omniport still saw considerable potential growth in the airport, the Directors concluded that a sale of Glasgow Prestwick would enable the Company to concentrate on gaining majority investments in other attractive target airports, such as Norwich and Maastricht Aachen.
