![]() Omniport holds a majority interest (80.1%) in Norwich International Airport (NWI), the East of England's Regional Gateway. Norwich was acquired in March 2004 from Norfolk County Council and Norwich City Council, who both retain the minority share (19.9%). Under the terms of the acquisition, Omniport committed to an £8.3 million five-year capital expenditure programme to update and expand the airport's facilities in order to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers. This figure has already been exceeded with Omniport investing over £14 million in its five years of ownership. This has included the investment of over £4 million in an extension to the main terminal building which now provides a far more comfortable environment for passengers, and £1.4m on a new state of the art fire training ground and fire applicance. Due to the requirement for continuing investment, particularly in the operational infrastructure of the airport (runways, taxiways and aprons) Omniport has had to make the difficult decision to introduce a £5 Airport Development Fee (ADF) for all passengers departing through the airport from 2nd April 2007. This follows the introduction of a similar fee at Newquay International Airport in Cornwall and the subsequent introduction of a fee at Blackpool Airport. Norwich International Airport serves the whole of East Anglia - a potential catchment area of up to 4 million people and it is over 90 miles from its nearest competing airport (London Stansted). Since Omniport acquired the airport, there was a rapid rise in the number and frequency of scheduled services - passenger numbers increased from 450,000 in 2005 and peaked at 775,000 in 2007. Since 2007, some route consolidation by our airline partners and, more significantly, the impact of the economic slowdown has cause passenger numbers to reduce to 420,000 in the year to 31 March 2010. Nevertheless the long term potential of the airport to provide sustainable business and leisure routes to its catchment has not changed and Omniport remains committed to the airport's growth. Currently scheduled routes operate to Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Exeter and Manchester. A wide range of charter services also operate to over 20 popular holiday destinations through tour operators including Thomson/First Choice, Thomas Cook, Newmarket Holidays, Balkan Holidays and Atlantic Holidays. For the 2010/11 summer and winter seasons charter services have added new destinations increasing capacity by 70%. The management team, led by Chief Executive and Group FD Andrew Bell, is focused on the sustainable growth of the route network from Norwich Airport. Their priorities at the moment include reinstating services to proven popular desitnations particularly in Spain and developing the network of point to point business routes which the regional economy demands. A number of new domestic and international routes are already confirmed for 2010/11 and more are expected to be announced over the course of 2010. The airport also owns 100% of Travel Norwich Airport Limited, and 100% of Legislator 1364 Ltd, which owns the award winning call centre building currently let to Royal Bank of Scotland.
